Modern Foreign Languages

Vision:

To be a department that creates an appreciation of language and culture through autonomy and adventure with the foreign language.

Aim:
To improve expectations, attainment and achievement of all students through a curriculum and ethos that is designed to inspire, stimulate and match students' needs and aspirations. The department is staffed by experienced subject specialists who are driven to share their passion for their languages and the culture of the countries where the languages are spoken. The staff members want to enable all students to communicate effectively and confidently in the foreign language and be able to learn invaluable understanding of their own languages, whilst building life skills.

The Curriculum:
Key Stage 3 (2 years)
All students study either French or German, depending on their band. Classes are set

according to ability across a range of subjects. Students have 5 one hour lessons each fortnight. In Years 7 and 8, students cover a range of topics including Phonics, Dictionary skills, Spontaneous talking, Self, Family and Friends, Home and Local Area, School and Education, Food and Drink, Leisure and Holidays. A variety of interactive resources are used to engage and challenge students. We have regular access to ICT suites and subscribe to several interactive websites.

 Key Stage 4 (3 years)

We offer GCSE French and German. The course involves the study of three broad themes:

  • Identity and culture (Youth culture, Lifestyle and Customs and Traditions)
  • Local, national, international and global areas of interest (Home and Locality, German/ French speaking countries and Global Sustainability)
  • Current and future study and employment (Current studies, the World of Work, Jobs and Future plans)

It is assessed through 4 skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing. The terminal exams will be worth 25% of your grade each. We currently use the OCR exam board but will use EDUQAS for the new GCSE from 2017. Students are assessed regularly using past papers, authentic text and literature, translation, speaking prompts and intervention for underachievement is rapid and robust.

The Team:
There are currently 3 members of full time experienced staff.

  • Ms Andrea Nandlal– Subject Leader,
  • Mrs Julia Clements – teacher of German
  • Mrs Mary Windows-Yule – teacher of French and Head of Year 7.

The Facilities:

Classrooms are positive and stimulating environments where all are encouraged to thrive and flourish in the foreign language and culture. Our aim is to inspire a love of languages which lasts a lifetime and a passion for wanting to visit the country to use the language first-hand.
