Physical Education

The school has a large Sports Hall, a purpose-built Gym and a Theatre which is used for Dance. In addition to the extensive playing fields there are good opportunities for fitness work in the Fitness Room. Another recent development is the refurbishment of the artificial cricket wicket and the new outdoor Basketball court. There is a grass athletics track with good jumping pits. The new building of an additional theatre will give greater opportunity to our students, but the biggest impact will undoubtedly be the brand new 'Astro turf' which will enhance the curriculum.

Statement of Work

Years 7 and 8 are split in half and have four lessons of PE including Dance in a fortnight. All classes are gender based with the exception of Year 7 Gym and Dance. At Key Stage 3 a broad and balanced curriculum is followed between individual activities (gym, dance, athletics) and games (rugby, basketball, hockey, netball, badminton, football, volleyball, cricket, tennis, rounders and softball).

At Key Stage 4 the students have three lessons in a fortnight and are given an element of choice (where possible) to follow a more intensive block of work for half a term or more at a time.

The department runs a successful GCSE course which has maintained its 100% record with steady average of 67% A-C. Although, this is set to rise significantly to 77% plus with the introduction of the very successful PE Btech course. Consequently this is an expanding area. There is also a Dance course which enjoys an excellent reputation within the County.

Extra-Curricular

The Department runs an extensive extra-curricular programme throughout the year and firmly believes in 'sport for all'. Excellence is nurtured and we have many individual and team honours to be proud of. For example, over 35 pupils gained representative honours last year alone for District or above. There is a wide range of activities available for all abilities in team games and individual activities. There is a great deal of competitive sport available throughout the year. This is supported by the SSCO programme and its aim to achieve the 5hour offer for all. In addition, there are thriving dance groups for both boys and girls which have been invited to showcase their work on numerous occasions at high profile events. The school often hosts visiting dance groups.

BTECH First Certificate in Sport

This Btech course is for those students who despite their ability enjoy physical activity and wish to learn more about sport. Although, there is a necessary amount of time spent in the classroom, a large proportion of the course is spent learning through the practical, depending on the units covered. It is best suited to those students who have the capability to be more independent in their learning and able to meet deadlines.

The level 2 course will last for two years and does not have a final exam. However, it has a series of assignments all of which must be successfully completed on time, because students are not practically assessed. The qualification is equivalent to two gcse's at grade C, B, or A depending on the units being graded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

This qualification will give the student a solid base from which to go on to college or seek employment within the sport sector at a junior level should they wish to.

GCSE Physical Education

The Physical Education course is for those students who enjoy physical activity and wish to learn more about the theory side of PE, therefore there is a necessary time spent in the classroom. It is best suited to those students who have a good grasp of English and an understanding of Science. The course is over two years and does require a commitment to the physical side especially fitness, because 60% is assessed on the student's personal performance and it is therefore expected that students should be achieving a level 5c and beyond by the end of year 8.

This qualification will give the student a solid base from which to go on to college to study A levels and beyond should they wish to.
