The Benefits that come with taking part in an extra-curricular activity

Naturally, we put a high importance on academic excellence and providing a rich and varied curriculum, but we don’t underestimate the value of our students having access to pursuits outside of the classroom.

We want to provide a learning environment that doesn’t stop when the bell rings at the end of the day. We do this through our Broadening Horizons programme, which offers expansive extra-curricular opportunities that aim to provide new experiences, build confidence and help every student reach their full personal potential.

In addition to what are seen as traditional after school activities, such as team sports and music, the pursuits that are part of our programme include at least one activity we believe will be of interest to every student.

The opportunities include:

  • Mountain Bike Club
  • Lego Club
  • Calligraphy
  • Creative Writing
  • Fashion Design Club
  • STEM Club
  • Choir

The benefits that come with taking part in an extra-curricular activity are far-ranging, so here’s why we’re encouraging all students to make use of what we offer.

Learn something new

Many students choose an extra-curricular group that is linked to a hobby that they are already interested in, but as our clubs are open to students of all abilities, they also provide the perfect opportunity to try something new, which could develop into a new passion.

Develop new skills

Learning an instrument requires perseverance and dedication, playing football or netball will help to teach teamworking skills, and taking part in an art activity will develop creativity. Extra-curricular opportunities instil new skills that will benefit students long after they have left Bishop Perowne.

Broaden social circles

Extra-curricular clubs are open to students of all ages, meaning they step away from only learning with peers from their year group. This helps to build new friendships with students who have a common interest.

Build self-esteem

Learning something new and succeeding in an activity that is enjoyed can boost our students’ confidence, increase their self-esteem and basically make them feel good about themselves, which will have a positive impact on mental health and well-being.

Improve academic performance

Taking part in activities that students enjoy and are passionate about can boost concentration, increase focus and improve brain function. These will have a benefit on academic performance and help students to feel more positive about all aspect of school.

The chance to have fun

Perhaps the most important benefit is that extra-curricular opportunities give our students the chance to have fun while doing something they enjoy!

A full timetable of the clubs that form part of our Broadening Horizons programme is published at the beginning of each academic year, and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
