Intent
In Child Development our intent is to develop students’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being. Whether this be a life-skill for future years or a foundation into a career centred around childcare.
Key Stage 4
The three pillars of Child Development at Bishop Perowne are:
- Health and wellbeing for child development
- Creating a safe environment and understand the nutritional needs of children from birth to five years
- Understanding the development of a child from birth to five years
In Child Development students will use their learning in practical, real-life situations, such as preparing a feed or meal for a child, choosing suitable equipment to use in a childcare setting, planning suitable plat activities and helping to prevent accidents in a childcare setting. This helps develop independence and confidence in using skills that would be relevant to the Childcare sector.
Furthermore, the OCR Cambridge Nationals in Child Development J809 helps students to develop learning and skills that can be used in other life and work situations such as research and communication skills.
Assessment & Lessons
Child Development is a Key Stage 4 course, in that students opt for this subject at the end of Year 9 to start studying in Year 10 and terminating in a 1 hour 15-minute written examination (40% of course grade) after having completed two Non-Examined Assessments (NEAs) each worth 30% of the final course grade.

R057, is the final examination which covers the knowledge, understanding and skills students need to successfully work as a health or childcare professional.
Topics covered include the pre-conception stage, key factors that impact on becoming pregnant, having a healthy pregnancy and creating a safe and healthy environment for the baby when it is born. You will also learn about the importance of both pre-conception health and creating conditions in which a child can thrive, including the prevention and management of childhood illnesses and creating a safe environment.

R058, is an NEA which requires students to learn how to create a safe environment for children from birth to five years in childcare settings. As well as, investigating and choosing equipment that is both suitable and safe for use.
Furthermore, students will also learn about children’s nutrition and dietary needs.
R059
R059, is also an NEA that requires students to learn the expected developmental norms for children from one to five years. They will use observation and research techniques and skills to investigate these development norms and explore findings.
Furthermore, students will also learn the importance of creating plans and providing play activities to support children in their development.
Students are regularly assessed throughout the course in lessons via the Show Me Boards, exit passes and end of topic assessments through to past examination papers for OCR Cambridge Nationals in Child Development J809. To support the knowledge-rich curriculum we provide detailed key terminology sheets and annotate learning journeys and revisit these regularly.
Enrichment & Co-curricular
Enrichment opportunities include:
- Guest speaker talks from midwives and qualified nannies.
- Paediatric first aid sessions.
- Year 11 Hubs to further aid students’ revision as they make their way to their final examinations at the end of Year 11.
- Educational visits to Worcester University to give students a chance to experience a midwifery lecture and take part in a practical session in their mock labour ward, helping them imagine the opportunities that lie ahead.
