Parents’ evening is one of the most important dates in our school calendar. Parental engagement is extremely valuable to students, and parents’ evening is an opportunity to demonstrate to your child and their teachers your continued support of their learning.
At Bishop Perowne, parents’ evening is just around the corner, and we’re looking forward to welcoming students and parents alike for this important event. To help you get the most out of the evening, we’ve put together a list of five reasons why attending parents’ evening is so beneficial.
1. The chance to discuss your child’s progress
While reports and assessments give a great indication of your child’s progress throughout the year, the opportunity to sit down with both your child and their teachers to discuss how they are getting on is invaluable. Talking about reports and test results together in greater detail and making a plan to aid further improvement is a great way to help your child boost their achievement.
2. A better understanding of what your child is like in a school setting
While you know your child better than anyone, there are sometimes significant differences in how your child behaves at home and at school. Children who are quiet at home can act up in a school setting to cover academic insecurities. Equally, some students who are chatty at home can lack confidence in a classroom setting. Parents’ evening offers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how your child feels at school and discuss how you can support their well-being and learning at home.
3. An opportunity to ask questions
Parent’s evening is not just about hearing what teachers have to say. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions about your child’s progress and how you can support them.
Of course, parent’s evening is not the only opportunity to talk to your child’s teachers, and if you have any concerns about their learning or development, you should talk to the school at the earliest opportunity. Teachers will want to work towards a solution as soon as possible, rather than waiting until parents’ evening to be made aware of a problem.

Parent’s evening is a chance to put names to faces and meet the people who are educating your child. This can give you a better insight into your child’s school life and help to break down the barriers to contacting teachers in the future.

Parents don’t always get many opportunities to visit their child’s school – particularly since the pandemic hit. Parents evening is a chance to see the kind of facilities your child has access to, what their learning environment is like, and begin to build relationships with their teachers – helping parents to feel like they too are a part of the school community.
