Intent
The Business department aims to equip learners with the skills and confidence to explore how different business situations affect business decisions.
We encourage learners to make informed choices about a wide range of further learning opportunities and career pathways as well as develop life skills that enable them to become financially and commercially aware.

In Business students will know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives and the impact of business on individuals and wider society. As well as developing enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen, drawing on evidence to make informed business decisions.
Further to these students will apply their knowledge and understanding to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts.
Assessment & Lessons
Business is a Key Stage 4 course, in that students opt for this subject at the end of Year 9 to start studying in Year 10 and terminating in two 1 hour 30-minute written examinations. Each paper consists of 15 multiple choice questions and three business case study scenarios.
Whilst studying the topic of Business activity leaners explore how and why businesses start and grow. The topics of marketing, people, operations and finance all require learners to explore the purpose and role of that department within business and how they influence business activity, and the decisions businesses take. Concluding with the influences on business that need learners to explore the importance of external influences on business and how businesses change in response to these influences.
Students are regularly assessed throughout the course in lessons via the Show Me Boards, exit passes and end of topic assessments through to past examination papers for OCR GCSE Business 9-1, J204.
To support the knowledge-rich curriculum we provide detailed key terminology sheets and annotate learning journeys and revisit these regularly.
Enrichment & Co-curricular
Enrichment opportunities include:
- Guest speaker talks from employment agencies, employment law representatives and marketing managers.
- We also run Year 11 Hubs to further aid students’ revision as they make their way to their final examinations at the end of Year 11.
- Educational visits to Worcester University to give students a chance to experience where innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership are developed, helping them imagine the opportunities that lie ahead.
