Classroom Culture

At Bishop Perowne Church of England College, we believe that every student deserves a positive, supportive environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

To achieve this, we use simple, consistent routines and a shared language across the school to help students stay focused, confident, and engaged in their learning. These routines and strategies, together with our core values of compassion, resilience, integrity, and respect, form the foundation of our school culture.

A key routine we use is STAR – Sit up, Track the teacher, Answer ready, and Respect in silence. This helps students listen carefully, whether it’s the teacher or a peer speaking, and supports strong focus with fewer distractions.

Teachers support this routine with simple, clear prompts such as, ‘Everyone sitting up… tracking me… respecting in silence,’ and use the 3-2-1 signal, a calm, consistent cue for silence, to manage noise levels and transitions smoothly.

Lessons start strongly, with teachers welcoming students at the door to set a positive tone and maximise learning time from the beginning.

To ensure high participation and check understanding, teachers use whiteboards in every lesson. This allows them to respond in the moment, offering the right support or challenge exactly when it’s needed. We expect 100% participation because we believe every student can contribute, succeed, and benefit from being fully involved in their learning.

We also place a strong emphasis on developing students’ oracy skills, the ability to speak clearly and listen actively. These skills are essential not just for academic success, but for helping students develop confidence, articulate their ideas, and engage thoughtfully with others. Oracy lays the foundation for effective communication, teamwork, and leadership, both in school and beyond.

These routines and strategies, grounded in our values of compassion, resilience, integrity, and respect, create a calm, respectful classroom culture where every student feels valued, heard, and supported to do their best.

strong sense of belonging

We’re proud of the strong sense of belonging across our school. Teachers actively remove barriers to learning so that all students have equal opportunities to succeed. We celebrate diversity and ensure that all voices are heard, whatever a student’s background or ability.

At Bishop Perowne, we know that positive relationships are the foundation of a successful learning environment. Students feel safe, seen, and supported by both teachers and peers.
