Broadening Horizons
Naturally, we put a high importance on academic excellence and providing a rich and varied curriculum, but we don’t underestimate the value of our students having access to pursuits outside of the classroom. We want to provide a learning environment that doesn’t stop when the bell rings at the end of the day.
We do this through our extensive co-curricular opportunities, trips, clubs and societies that aim to provide new experiences, build confidence and help every student reach their full personal potential.
The opportunities include a number of clubs from Mountain Biking to Law, from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) to various vocal groups, from Homework Support to Fashion Design, and from Calligraphy to Debating.
We also offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme to students.
A full timetable of the clubs that form part of our Broadening Horizons programme is published at the beginning of each academic year, and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Benefits
The benefits that come with taking part in co-curricular activities are far-ranging, which is why we’re always encouraging all students to make use of what we offer.
Improved Academic Performance
Participating in co-curricular clubs students are passionate about can increase their brain function, help them concentrate, and support them in managing their time better – all of which contribute to higher grades.
Learn something new
Many students choose things that are linked to a hobby that they are already interested in, but as our clubs are open to students of all abilities, they also provide the perfect opportunity to try something new, which could develop into a new passion.
Productive Breaks
Clubs and societies give students something fun to do aside from school, enabling them to broaden social circles. Clubs and societies are open to students of all ages, meaning they step away from only learning with peers in their year group. This helps to build new friendships with students who have a common interest.
Build self-esteem
Learning something new and succeeding in an activity that is enjoyed can boost our students’ confidence, and increase their self-esteem which will have a positive impact on mental health and well-being.
The chance to have fun
Perhaps the most important benefit is that co-curricular opportunities give our students the chance to have fun while doing something they enjoy!
Essential Life Skills
On top of all of the above benefits of co-curricular activities, one of the greatest advantages they give are ‘real world’ skills.
These skills include (but are not limited to):
- Goal setting
- Teamwork
- Time management
- Prioritisation
- Problem solving
- Analytical thinking
- Leadership
- Public speaking
The more students push themselves in their co-curricular endeavours, the more they’ll develop these skills.
