EAL
at Bishop Perowne Church of England College
English as a Foreign Language (EAL)
When newly enrolled EAL students join Bishop Perowne, we initially assess their academic ability in order to position them within the appropriate teaching groups.
Depending on their results we offer 1-to-1 or small group teaching in EAL sessions, and in-lesson support.
We have an open door policy in EAL and students come to us as they wish during lunch and break times. We further assist them with homework when needed, as well as with any other difficulties they may face.
Some of the things that we accomplished in the EAL department this academic year:
- The students’ wrote, published, and sold an international travel guide to raise money for EAL activities.
This was the latest addition to our published work which includes an international cooking book, and a multicultural poetry book. - We held a cake sale that raised money for EAL activities.
- We held an EAL workshop for external professionals to demonstrate the purpose and functions of the EAL department.
- We held our annual Easter show, performed by students in EAL for their families and guests. This encouraged interactive and engaging learning by allowing the students to perform in both English and their home languages.
- We went on our yearly cinema trip that promotes integration into British culture and building multicultural friendships.
- A guest speaker from the University of Worcester facilitated a “Letters to Earth” event that spread environmental awareness, and allowed students to display their work in an exhibition at “The Hive”.
- Students created posters about their favourite authors to commemorate this year’s World book day.
- We participated in an origami competition that allowed the EAL students to merge with the wider school community.
- As part of our yearly Christmas celebrations, we attended a Pantomime trip that exposed EAL students to typical British cultural experiences.
- A ‘Refugee and Migrant Centre’ event allowed our EAL staff to be educated on the help that is available for the refugee and migrant communities.
- Our annual sports day in November united all students via a universally shared interest in games and sports.
- For our yearly summer trip, we went to Stratford Upon Avon to immerse EAL students in British heritage, and learn about Shakespeare and his influence on English language and literature.
- Mrs Griffiths trained student teachers on EAL strategies during a quarterly University visit (September 2024 and February 2025).
- Mrs Griffiths educated Bishop Perowne’s latest cohort of early career teachers on EAL teaching strategies and techniques.
