The School Day
at Bishop Perowne Church of England College
The School Day
Our compulsory school day starts at 8.30am and ends at 3.00pm, totalling 32.5 hours per week.
Our timetable is structured over a two-week period, with the first of those weeks labelled ‘Week A’ and the second labelled ‘Week B’.
If you want to check which week we are or will be on, please email info@bishopperowne.co.uk or check your MyChildatSchool portal.
Students are able to use the school canteen during mid-morning or lunchtime breaks. Information on the canteen, and the meals offered, are available here.
We provide indoor and outdoor spaces for those eating food from the canteen or wishing to bring a packed lunch.
We operate a ‘closed site’ and students must remain on the premises during break and lunchtimes.
Our times of day below apply to every week and day.
Our Dining Facilities
At Bishop Perowne Church of England College, we have our own state of the art dining facility, ‘The Hillside Café’ – as well as this, we also have two Grab and Go facilities called ‘The Grub Hub’.
The Hillside Café offers a three weekly cycle of menus with a variety of delicious options.
Breakfast
As part of the Department of Education National Breakfast programme we offer free bagels for all students between 8.00am and 8:30am. Students can choose to add bacon or cheese to the bagels at the cost of 40p.
Break time
Break time 10:40am to 11.00am we offer a range of toast and bacon rolls. We also have available, but not daily, sausage rolls, pizza slices and Belgian waffles.
Lunch
Cooked meals are provided including a vegetarian option and a street food option for take away which are prepared in house in our school kitchen by Mrs Rachel Price, the Catering Manager, and her team. We also provide a range of sandwiches, baguettes, wraps, and hot paninis. Daily there are jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings including tuna, cheese and baked beans and a salad bar with protein options to add and pasta pots. Desert is available in the form of homemade cake, flapjack, and shortbread and on occasion, apple crumble, chocolate pudding, treacle pudding, angel delight and jelly. We try to provide some halal and vegan options where possible.
Drinks are available to purchase at all times that The Hillside café and Grub Hub are open and range from apple and orange juice, plain and flavoured water, milkshake and suso a healthier carbonated drink. Water is freely available at all times.
Fruit pots and fruit is also available daily.
All food is prepared in line within Government Guidelines and legislation for standards of school food in England complying with the requirements of School Food Regulations 2014. Our aim is to ensure that food available is nutritious and of high quality and try and offer a range of healthy options. We have a weekly menu with different dishes provided daily and this rotates on a three-week cycle. A copy of the current menus is included in your pack which will be in place until October half term. The menu is changed twice a year. A copy of the current product price list is included but this is due to be reviewed in the Autumn term and a revised list will follow.
We try to encourage students to dine in the Hillside Café.
allergens & dietery requirements
Allergen information is checked daily by the team and a folder is placed on display in the servery for students to access if required.
If you require any further information in respect of allergens please contact our Catering Manager, Rachel Price on 01905 746827.
Free school meals
If your son or daughter is in receipt of Free School meals, they have an allowance currently at £2.80 which is added to their account at lunchtime ONLY.
We offer a meal deal for this which means they will be entitled to a meal with a desert OR a meal with a drink. We have cups and water stations also available in the dining hall and student services. Please note, if items are purchased at breakfast or breaktime, these are not covered by the Free School Meals allowance, and we ask that the account be topped up with money via ParentPay.
We operate a cashless system, and all meals must be paid for via ParentPay. Please see additional information on paying for Meals at Bishop Perowne Church of England College.
How to pay
At Bishop Perowne we operate a cashless payment system for meals. ParentPay is the usual and encouraged way to pay for food, trips, and stationery items.
We ask Parents to provide permission for Biometrics which uses a students fingerprint to allocate purchases to their accounts via our tills at The Hillside café and The Grub Hub. A form to complete is included in your starter pack. Fingerprints will be taken, most likely, on the first day of term.
Payment is via ParentPay and a letter with your log in details and ParentPay Guidance is provided in your starter pack. The letter contains an activation username and password. You will have to use these to log in for the first time. After activating our account your username will be changed to the email address you provide, and you will be asked to change your password.
You can find the ParentPay website by typing “ParentPay” into any search engine or use the following web address https://www.parentpay.com. You can use ParentPay on any computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. If you do not have access to this method of using ParentPay, we can provide you with a barcoded letter for payment of meals and then for individual trips which can be taken to any shop with the Pay Point sign outside and paid for over the till.
You can add a student to an existing ParentPay account. Instructions on how to this are also included in your starter pack. You can add up to six students to a single ParentPay account, even if they attend different schools. You will have the facility to reset your own password if you lose or forget it on the ParentPay log in page.
The ParentPay website makes it easy for you to keep track on your son/daughters spending on meals and stationery and you can review transaction history. If you require further information on these transactions once the new term starts our Finance department can help you.
Please email finance@bishopperowne.co.uk or call Finance on 01905 746802. Reception on 01905 746800 can also put you through to the Finance Office. We are always happy to help. There is also lots of help on the ParentPay website, if you have any problems, you can access the “Help” pages on the ParentPay website.
We ask that you always keep your ParentPay account topped up to ensure that your son/daughter is not refused food in The Hilltop café and The Grub Hub. We have a strict policy that debts should be no more than £2.50.
