Intent
In Psychology, we aim to engage students in the study of human behaviour through active psychological enquiry. Students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and develop into independent learners with enquiring minds.
We support students in becoming critical and reflective thinkers who can analyse information, evaluate evidence and consider different perspectives. A strong emphasis is placed on developing a growth mindset, where students are encouraged to embrace challenges, show resilience and continually strive to improve.
Through the exploration of real-life issues, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and others. We hope this not only enriches their learning experience but also inspires a lasting interest in Psychology and encourages students to continue studying the subject beyond GCSE.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, students follow the Edexcel GCSE Psychology specification. Our curriculum is designed as a knowledge-rich programme that supports students in building a strong understanding of key psychological concepts over time.
The course is delivered in a largely linear structure, allowing students to develop depth of knowledge as they progress through the content. Alongside this, key themes and concepts are revisited throughout the course to strengthen understanding and support long-term retention.
Our teaching is underpinned by clearly defined Pillars of Learning, which ensure that students develop both subject knowledge and essential skills in analysis, evaluation and critical thinking across the two-year course.
Assessment & Lessons
In GCSE Psychology, students benefit from regular opportunities to check and improve their learning. Lessons make use of ‘show me’ boards so teachers can quickly identify gaps in understanding and address them immediately.
Students receive regular formative feedback and take part in exam-style activities. They practise real GCSE questions in class, helping them build confidence and develop strong exam technique. Assessments are cumulative, meaning students regularly revisit and apply previous knowledge to strengthen long-term memory and understanding.
We follow the Edexcel GCSE Psychology (9–1) specification. The course is assessed through two written examinations, Paper 1 and Paper 2, at the end of Year 11. There are no tiered papers, so all students sit the same examinations.
To support success, students are provided with a wide range of revision materials and booklets throughout the course. These help prepare them for their Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs), which take place in November and February of Year 11. By this point, students will have completed many past exam questions, giving them valuable experience in applying their knowledge and refining their exam skills.

Enrichment & Co-curricular
Students studying GCSE Psychology benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities designed to support their academic progress and future aspirations.
- Careers Week: In Year 10, all students take part in dedicated Careers Week lessons during the autumn term. These sessions help students make meaningful links between their learning in Psychology and a wide range of future career pathways.
- Careers in Psychology: Career opportunities related to Psychology are embedded throughout the curriculum and regularly referenced across all topics, helping students understand the real-world applications of their studies.
- Psychology Hub: Year 11 students are invited to attend Psychology Hub. These sessions provide targeted preparation for PPEs and GCSE examinations, helping students build confidence, consolidate knowledge and develop effective exam skills.
